Bristol City Leap, a ground breaking collaboration between Bristol City Council and Ameresco, has announced plans to submit a planning application for a solar farm on a site owned by the council. This project, located to the south of Hersey Gardens Road in south Bristol, will have a capacity of 1.3 Megawatts, generating clean energy to power the equivalent of 506 homes annually, thereby improving air quality and promoting sustainable energy solutions.

As the second solar site plans launched this year from the Bristol City Leap partnership, this initiative marks another crucial advancement in Bristol’s efforts to meet its decarbonisation goals while enhancing the city’s renewable energy framework. By lowering carbon emissions, these solar projects are set to play a significant role in Bristol’s sustainable future.

Renewable energy initiatives not only provide clean energy but also bolster community resilience, improve energy security, and create essential local jobs. With a strong track record, these projects help ensure both the environment and local communities can thrive together.

Mark Apsey MBE, Senior Vice President at Ameresco, stated: “The development of this new solar farm in South Bristol marks a significant milestone in our journey toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. This project will deliver vital renewable energy infrastructure and create skilled local employment opportunities from planning and construction to long-term maintenance. It’s a powerful example of how we can strengthen our communities while accelerating the transition to net zero.”

Councillor Martin Fodor, Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Committee, added, “We are thrilled to see the development of innovative projects like this in Bristol. Solar farms are essential in helping us achieve our goal of becoming a carbon-neutral city. By increasing the share of renewable energy in our grid, we can significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. This project truly reflects the spirit of the Bristol City Leap partnership.”

The forthcoming solar project aligns closely with Bristol City Leap’s mission to aid the city in reaching net zero by 2030. The site was carefully selected based on thorough assessment criteria, including its connectivity to the local grid and its potential for energy production.

Bristol City Leap is committed to actively engaging with local communities to ensure that renewable energy goals reflect the diverse interests of residents. In the coming year, the partnership plans to meet nearby residents directly, along with hosting community engagement events at venues such as The Withywood Centre. This initiative invites local residents to learn more about the project and its associated benefits. Further information will be made available on the Bristol City Leap website as it progresses.

This project embodies the core values of Bristol City Leap, focusing on enhancing community welfare. A portion of the funds generated will be designated to support local community projects. Building upon the success of the existing Bristol City Leap Community Energy Fund, this initiative will provide even more targeted support to the community.

Through the collaborative efforts of Bristol City Council and Ameresco, Bristol is set to accelerate its transition towards renewable energy, fostering sustainable growth and solidifying its status as a leader in decarbonisation.
